On our way to the San Diego area, we decided to stop off at Dana Point to use the facilities and grab a quick bite to eat. We had been to Dana Point in the past as my companion's father had his sailboat parked here many years ago. There were lots of restaurants in the area and a fair amount of foot traffic. We liked the looks of this place and stopped here. We split a large pastrami sandwich and enjoyed it. The interior is rather ordinary and the service is good, though our waitress seemed like she had a hard life. Would we come back here again? Maybe, but with the proliferation of other dining places, we might not make a special effort.

Great pastrami and potato salad. Servers were not the friendliest.

Excellent food! If you are looking for a great deli, this is a must. They have excellent sandwiches and the chicken noodle soup with matzo ball soup is the BEST I've ever had!!!

on a sad week, my heart calls out for the ocean, so here i was, all the way out into the oc ... a lil bit aways from irvine, and only a few steps away into sd county... dana point, what a beautiful area it is... when in need for a quick bite, do yourself a favor, and make a spot to harbor deli... overall, it was pretty darn yummy... the owners own a dessert place next door (ice cream, cakes, etc), and i must say their raspberry/blueberry cheesecake was SO good.... not too rich, and not too sweet, absolutely perfect! i hear it's homemade! we got their infamous corned beef/pastrami sammie and eggplant parmesan and everything tasted so homemade i was crying for more, but it didnt strike me in any way to make this place a 5. i tried, but i just couldn't... their side cole slaw was pretty darn good too... you can either choose from a 1/2 jumbo or the orig size. price varies. from overstuffed sammies to burritos (?) to soups and salads for lunch, dinner takes you on a diff twist. service: friendly, very personable and easy to please. i swear, they have you covered from breakfast to dinner, and not to forget, their dessert right next door...

We used to go to this place often. It was more of a ma and pop place where they came to our table, took our order, brought us pickles, and kibbitz (small talk) with us. We went there the other night and we had to order at the counter. They brought our food to us but it took 30 ish minutes and no kibbitz. We ordered a corned beef sandwich on sourdough. When it came the bread wasn't grilled, not even toasted. The sandwich was completely dry and the bread was falling apart. I chose to eat just the meat which was very lean and tasty. The pickle that was on the plate was tasty as well, as we remembered. They didn't come back to see how we were doing either. Very disappointed. We won't be going back.

If you want a sandwich that resembles expired canned dog food, please come to this place. My friend and I entered this establishment expecting at least decent food and decent service. Instead, the waitress and owner stared at us for the majority of our meal. We both ordered a chicken salad sandwich with chicken soup for $18 dollars a pop. The chicken soup tasted like it came out of a can, slightly sour and strange tasting, and the sandwich...no words. The salad was one lump in the middle of two pieces of bread, not even spread out evenly. Then the side of white bread, tasted oddly sour and hard. The server was nice. But not nice enough to compensate for the staring and the horrible food. When we came home an hour later, both of us had a small case of food poisoning (neither of us ate anything else except the food from this place). For $18/person, this almost ruined our day. I definitely would not recommend.

Waited about 20 min for a plain bagel & cream cheese and a BLT. This was before 10am when there was no line and the place was slow. Was told they gave away our food to someone else who appeared to be in more of a hurry then we were. When I asked for my money back because I no longer wanted to wait the owner told me she wasn't able to do that and to just take the food once it was ready. Never coming back, do not suggest ever going here.

12.95 for a cold roast beef sandwich on cold bread totally stale! Cold freezer burn French fries. Horrible service! Long wait when no one was in the entire restaurant. The man taking my order kept repeating it back to me wrong over and over again. Two simple sandwiches he didn't understand anything we said! I am SHOCKED this place is in business it is Awful and I would honestly rather starve then eat this crap! Do not go here!

Can't do zero stars so it gets one. Taking order was painful. Service was lousy. Toast was burnt. Who burns toast?! Young girl serving with long hair all over the place and she's very rude to customers. Very unprofessional all the way around. Go to Denny's. It's way better

Very disappointing. $15 double stuffed sandwich was more bread than meat. Brisket sandwich was very dry. Will not eat here again.

Wow! Rude!!! My family and I stood in line for several minutes waiting for our turn. The lady at counter finished helping the people in front of us. We walk up...and she makes no eye contact. She walks from behind the counter and leaves. You heard me, leaves! Not excuse me I will be right back. Or, can you please wait a minute. Nope just left us standing there....racist people are a menace to society.

We had 1/2 sandwiches (turkey & pastrami). The meat was good, fresh & plentiful. Both sandwiches on delicious New York style rye bread. Cole slaw @ potato salad really good -- not too much mayo. My husband is a native New Yorker. He gives the food five stars. I usually don't like deli but I give the food five stars for quality as well. Price is good for all you get. Service was fast & friendly. If you like deli, this is as good as it gets in Orange County for deli style sandwiches. I will come back to try a salad -- more my usual fare. Apple pie looks good!

I used to love this place. Walked in for lunch yesterday and was surprised to see that the "full-service" was changed to "order at the counter". I don't want to go somewhere and pay $15 for a sandwich and have to serve myself! I really missed the waitress serving me the bowl of dill pickles! Not sure what the motivation of the management was to make this change but they lost me! Won't be going back!

I am going to give this joint a 5 for ambience, warmth, friendly service every time, and because it is open 24 hours and, yes, there is a crowd at midnight. It is happy and noisy and partied out and... Who cares about the food at 1:00 am (It is what you expect... Great cheeseeeee fries and steak chili)

Just got the Amazon something smoothie. The worker blended it for about 4 min while she helped another customer. The customer even said it was fine to finish the smoothie before she was helped. The worker said "It's ok." The smoothie was warm, watery, and bubbly. We took it back and said it was warm. She tossed some ice in and blended it back up. Now it's nice and watery and chunky. Save your money and don't come here. Used to work at a smoothie bar and that's not how you treat a smoothie. Remake it.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS -- THE ABSOLUTE WORST RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE IN YEARS !!! After our day at Catalina, my brother from Utah and I wanted a special capstone treat to end his vacation on a high note. We are both highly educated professionals but simple in our restaurant requirements. We are not the "fussy" types, just wanted a nice meal and were willing to drop the requisite $$$ for it. We picked up their paper menu on the way over to the island and reviewed it, noting the pictures of huge sandwiches piled high with pastrami, etc. I said, now this looks like a "Canters" style New York Deli. Upon our return, we both ordered "full" pastrami sandwiches ($15.50 each) plus drinks, sides, etc. and my brother got his delivered first. We were both shocked as the sandwich isn't half the size of the picture, and just served plainly, meat on bread. Very disappointing, clearly their pictures in their menu are grossly exaggerated and highly misleading. Next the cashier/server brought my soup, which was OK except the chicken was apparently just pulled off the bone and dropped into the pot, so I had to take it out of the soup and cut it up on the plate, then re-insert it into the bowl just to eat it with the soup spoon! By the time I finished my soup, my brother was almost done with his sandwich, so I went to the counter (this was at least 30 minutes after we first ordered both sandwiches) and I inquired about my sandwich. The lady at the counter (I think she may be an owner, from another country?) looked dumbfounded and exclaimed with a dubious "You ordered a pastrami?" She then yelled at the other guy in back (cook?) to find her receipt (she was the cashier, mind you, and when I politely asked for extra pickles, she yelled at me "I HEARD YOU !!". What an ugly human being. After this I asked her to have it wrapped to go as my brother was finished eating already. No apology, no offer of something in lieu of the horrible service, not even a thank you for coming. The nasty woman in charge just plunked down the bag on my table and took off. How the hell you can run a business like that and survive in Dana Point is beyond me. After we got into the car, we shaked our heads over how horrible they were once they realized they forgot to make my sandwich. These dirt bags are the types that could sabotage a sandwich (using the term "sabotage" to be polite here) to try to vindicate their screwed up ego-centric selves. When I got home, I tossed my entire dinner in the garbage as I was thinking she may have done something to my sandwich -- she came off as THAT EVIL Our total bill came to just under $50 (NOT CHEAP!) and we were treated like a nuisance from the get-go there. Want to grossly over pay for a sandwich you may not get until you ask a second time, only to get a rude response? Then be treated like it's all your fault? (Even though we were the only ones inside their restaurant at the time -- an omen, in retrospect). Then bon appetit' -- but caveat emptor. THIS PLACE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST DELI-STYLED RESTAURANT I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. ONCE AGAIN, AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Yuk. I mean, really ... yuk. Don't waste your money. The service was not very friendly, but the food was much worse. My son got pancakes and I still can't figure out how you make pancakes taste bad. I got scrambled eggs and biscuits with gravy and I couldn't even eat it (and trust me, I like almost everything). When they put the plate down, the smell of the biscuits and gravy was awful ... and they tasted just as bad. And eggs! Again, how do you make scrambled eggs taste bad??? It's eggs, and you stir them up as you cook them! I didn't know you could mess them up! I can't even remember what my husband had but he said it was just okay. I'm shocked that a place in this location would be this bad.

Sorry to post like this. Save your time. Save your money. Save a long wait. Poor service. After waiting way too long I asked about our order and was given a full runaround Here's your order. Oops wrong order etc etc. Got the food finally. Poor quality sandwich. Blah French fry's. A little 1/2 cup of tasteless coleslaw for $2.50Do your self a favor and go next door into Turks(I know it's a bar) and get some very tasty food. Maybe the Deli folks will read this and call in "Resturant Impossible"

BEWARE, DON'T EAT HERE. As a local I use to come to this place for a bite to eat and to say hello to friends. The food and customer service use to be extremely good. I was always greated by the staff and waited on at the table. Well today when my Mother and I stopped in for a simple hamburger and coke we discovered the place had new ownership and had a walk up counter to place your orders. After standing at the counter for 10 minutes while this young man and old woman fussed over the cash register they finally acknowledged we were standing there. The old woman asked what would we like. I ordered 2 cheese hamburgers, 1 order of onion rings, 2 diet cokes. The old woman didn't seem to know how to work the register. She asked what kind of cheese we wanted on our hamburgers. Once the order was placed we found a seat. Within 10 minutes of placing our order the old woman came to our table to ask us if we ordered the ham and cheese sandwiches. We said No and she went away. Another 10 minutes or so went by when a young man came to our table to ask us what kind of cheese did we want on our hamburgers AGAIN. After awhile we got our food. The bun looked like someone squashed it and tore at it. Meat was very good. Potato Salad was awful. Tasted like it was sour. Onion rings were good. The service was severely lacking. No one ever came to our table to see how we were doing. These people never greated us with a smile or hello, never told us thank you for coming. The prices were way to expensive for serve yourself place. I really don't think this place will be in business for long. I know we will NEVER COME BACK. You lost our business and that of all our friends. Awful Place, dirty too. Don't Go.

We had the pastrami half jumbo on sourdough with fries to go. Atmosphere was cool, wait time was reasonable, just don't like the idea of spending almost $15 for half a sandwich. I will say though, the pastrami was delicious.

There's not many places in the general area, or with in walking distance and after a nice afternoon spent kayaking the bay we were hungry and just ready to eat. This spot was pretty empty when we arrived. Many of the tables were messy. For me, the menu didn't seem appealing. I wanted something light, and ended up ordering nothing. My friend got the tuscan salad and said it was delicious and it did look very good. My daughter got the burger with fries and gobbled it up. The service was greatly lacking. There were at least 4 people working and only two tables seated. Yet, I sat there with no water for a long time. We asked them to split the check and they did it wrong. I'd understand if it were busy, but that wasn't the case. I don't think I'll ever be back or recommend this place.

Did the ownership change? My husband and I used to come here all the time since we had a boat in the harbor. We decided to stop in since we were on our bikes and this was always our go to place. Found out its only counter service now and it seems they raised the prices as well! I though $12.95 for a half of a sandwich, WOW! But then I remembered they were always very generous with the meat. I ordered a brisket sandwich with the Au Jus and french fries, my husband ordered the cheese steak sandwich with fries. The waitress brings out our order and it's just the sandwiches, she said the fries were coming. First off I was baffled at how much we just paid for my sandwich remember $12.95!! Well it had hardly any meat!!! Gone are the generous portions of meat piled high! I basically just paid $12.95 for some sliced brisket thrown on a 4 inch piece of french bread!! Oh, and our french fries are missing in action! We eat our sandwiches and still no fries....we sat for about 15 minutes before my husband got up and went to the counter and asked the waitress where our fries were....she said to one of the cooks "where are the fries for the brisket sandwich and cheesesteak sandwich" the cook said "Oh yeah" and went back to the kitchen and got our fries, they were hard and overcooked, I asked for tabasco sauce and i was given a bottle of tapatio that did'nt have a lid and looked like it had been sitting out for years!!! What an experience. It's safe to say we won't be coming back here again!!

Had their calzone, it was pretty good, but ive had better. I'd like to go back to try more, only problem is I live in north orange county. Cool little place though. Nothing fancy but still good.

My friend and I went here while our husbands got fish and chips next door. We ordered the smoked chicken salad. Not good. Dry, bland taste, bread was hard on edges, no lettuce for $12.95. The cole slaw was good that's why 2 stars. Service was slow. I have to say some of the meat sandwiches at other tables looked good.

If your thinking of getting a quick to go bite before boarding the catalina ferry - forget it! Waited 15 minutes for bagel and cream cheese. Cook didn't know how to incorporate toasting with grilling at the same time. Also my bagel had to be cued in with customers who sat down for a meal. I asked to retrieve the bagel in order to catch the ferry. Never did get toasted so it was hard as a rock. Rude blonde who was the cashier. Guy who ordered after us had his meal deliver ed 20 minutes after us by the restaurant worker onto the ferry! Will never go back there again.

Great casual spot right on the marina. Reubens, hotdogs, pizza, burgers. A little taste of the NYC on the West Coast. They have beer too! Super great service. Ivan is a superstar there. He went the extra mile not once but three times. This is what casual food should be like.

Wow! What a find! If you like NY pizza, you've got to try this place. The tastiest sauce I've had in CA. Sooooo good. It's a hidden gem! We were just walking around the harbor and noticed it said "New York" pizza. Ken is always looking for a good snack so we went in for a ice. I actually passed on a slice because I've seen NY pizza in several places and they were nothing close to what I expect in a NY pizza. When Ken got his slice, it looked really good.... Thin but chewy and I took a bite. Well, ken had to get another slice because I devoured his! We get that pizza three times or so a month. Hmmmm.... Tonight may be one of those times

Rudest service here. A few friends and I went in to grab some coffee and we felt like we were just inconveniencing them the whole time. My friend asked what kind of coffee they had and Tiffany, the girl taking our order, pointed to the menu without saying a word. Never going back.

The service was poor. Waitstaff talking to each other and on their cell phones while I waited to place my order. I was standing right in front of them but they didn't care. Also one of the worse mochas have had. Sad . . Such a beautiful location.

The BF and I decided to have sandwiches for lunch in Dana Point Harbor. We went to the Harbor Delicatessen. I had the burger with pastrami on top with a side of potato salad. The BF had a rueben/pastrami sandwich with a side of french fries. We sat in the patio area. Service was prompt and friendly. The server ask us if we wanted to snack on pickles. We snacked on the pickles as we waited for our food. While enjoying the view. Our food came out and they were DELICIOUS. My pastrami burger was lodged with grilled onions and the potato salad was fabulous. The BF equally enjoyed his rueben/pastrami sandwich and their crispy fries as well. We look forward to coming back to try their pizza as their are two parts to the restaurant, the delicatessen side and then the pizza parlor side.

This is the best deli in Dana Point! I go with my grandparents every time i'm in California. I have had their sandwiches, California wrap and pizza. Everything is AMAZING. Beautiful patio so you can sit outside and enjoy the ocean breeze and California sun. Doesn't get any better than that. Highly recommend!!

My husband & I have been here many times as we love their sandwiches. Normally its an OK experience, but today was horrible. Our waitress Lori greeted us nicely asking if we wanted something to drink. We both asked for Cokes and she brought us Pepsi! UGH! Gross! Yes Lori, you shouldn't assume people would be OK with Pepsi when they order Coke. Our order was placed and then brought out. We enjoyed our sandwiches and then asked Lori for a to-go box, which at this time walked away without ecknowleding that she had heard us. I got up to go wash my hands and asked her again if she could bring us a to-go box, and her response was "I heard you honey, I'm like a mom, I hear you but just don't respond." WTH? I use to wait tables for 16 years and never had acted like this or had anyone wait on me and act like this! As I came back from the bathroom, my husband then told me that when Lori came back to our table, she just threw the bag and to-go box on the plate that my husband was still eating off of! I shouldn't have given her the tip I did, but I didn't want to have to deal with her again and ask for smaller bills. We may or maynot be back there. But if we do, we will make sure to not sit in Lori's section. Just a little F.Y.I. Lori.......if you make eye contact & communicate with your customers, you might get a bigger tip. Your rudeness is what makes people not want to go back there. Also, enough with the fake smile, its not becoming of you. Relax, enjoy your job, and maybe people will want to go back there. The 2 stars are for the sanwhiches only.

Stopped in for lunch yesterday before deep sea fishing, and we found it to be a very positive experience. I had breakfast, my son had lunch, and we both found our food to be tasty - although I only had cottage cheese and an everything bagel. His sandwhich was very nice, and hearty. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. I'll certainly come again.

Me and my wife became sick after eating lunch at your deli on 2/9/2013 at 11.15 am very strange tasting potato salad. I think that was what did it? Tried to call and email for refund ,so far no response. Waiter was very strange,I hope he did'nt pee in my grub.

This isn't a fancy place and they don't use table clothes, but the do have the best corned beef on rye sandwiches and Chicken matzah ball soup west of New York City. Their rye bread is made onsite. It is the really excellent rye bread, not the imitation rye they sell in the markets. Excellent New York style cheese cake also.

Very disappointing. I paid $12.50 for a turkey sandwich and it was tiny. Forget about made to order, they slapped some turkey, cheese, lettuce and tomato on a French roll and gave me mayo/mustard on the side. I asked if the roll was soft and she said, yes ....Not!! This local spends a lot of time and $ at the Harbor and I won't be back here anytime soon.

We stopped by for breakfast this morning. It was a little quiet, which tends to make me nervous. It is also somewhat 'worn' in terms of the decor, which tends to say 'its been here a while, trust them'. So, we seated ourselves in a booth and the super attentive waitress came by with the menu and took our drinks orders. First off - the coffee is really very good. I have no idea what it is, but it is certainly a step up from the regular coffee you get in a low-price diner. We both ordered a 'full house' breakfast, which consists of two egg, two sausages (links) and two slices of bacon, plus the usual breakfast syrup. The food was very tasty. Actually it was extremely tasty, the pancakes had that 'secret recipe' taste to them that indicates 'scratch made', not from a packet. The sausages were delicious, my over-easy eggs were perfect too. The bacon, while tasty, was slight crispier than my taste, but I am not knocking a star off for that. My coffee refill was timed perfectly - I was into the last third and they do not skimp on the supply of creamer either. The best bit though, that drinks and two large breakfasts came to $22. Compared to most diners, that is a really good deal. When you count how tasty the food was and how good the service is, then that deserves at least six, if not seven stars out of five.

Went to the Harbor "New York" Deli for Labor Day breakfast. Being a deli serving corned beef we both ordered corned beef hash and eggs. The hash was 90% potatoes with ,the corned beef minced so finely that one could not taste it. Hormel canned hash would have been preferable. The coffee was good. The service was harried as one might expect on a holiday. I could not find a web site so I am sending this in hopes they might see this and improve their quality control.

The only reason I am giving it two stars is because of the only two good things about this place: the chicken noodle soup with matzo ball and the roast beef sandwich with au jus. That's it. The service sucks. They don't care. The last time I went in, some teenager (who I think was the waitresses daughter) was there building pyramids with plastic cups. The waitress saw me at the counter, looked right at me, and then walked away asking out loud if the people sitting outside were customers. The music was too loud. The waitress was more invested in watching what her daughter was doing. And I HOPE those plastic cups were not given out afterwards because they HAD to be contaminated from the cup lips touching the table and the teenager's hands.

I can't believe I never reviewed Harbor Deli.....? After PJ Bernstein's sold to a new owner, (PJ was on the W. side of the 5fwy, S. side of Alicia), and then PJ finally closed, Harbor Deli was my only NYC style, non-kosher deli option. But that was before the original owner, Tommy, sold a few years ago. Since the sale, I'd returned a few times, and noticed differences in both the corned beef and pastrami, and the service level. This is a "wharf restaurant", which sometimes translates to the ownership relying on the tourist flow more than their own hard efforts and management skills. Some restaurants believe their location will allow them more slack. I've ordered a couple "to-go" sandwiches over the past couple years, but that's it. I'm not a big fan anymore. Unfortunately, it seems all the NYC style deli's here in the OC buy from local suppliers... not from serious deli meat purveyors. Too bad, as I'd gladly pay the upcharge for great corned beef and pastrami. I really like the atmosphere, being right there on the wharf. The location is great. And when I kept my boat in the marina, it was a perfect "deli-supply-point", either before, during, or after taking out the boat. But again, after the sale, something changed. I believe they're now owned by the same person that owns the food shop next door. (?) As for the complaints about the service.... I have this gut feeling that has more to do with the new owners than the staff. I hadn't seen the owner floating around like I remember Tommy doing years ago. That makes a huge difference.

worst service ever. the owner/manager told the elderly helper to make sure he charged me extra for a second cup for my smoothie. no problem, but as he apologized for the policy, she cuts him off and says "don't be sorry, these things cost us money and business is business." i will not deny that she is right - things cost money. but the implied point that i wanted something free AND to reiterate that $.50 f or the 2nd cup was worth a) insulting a customer who only wanted 2 cups from the start & was willing to pay, and b) ensuring that you let customers know that it's always profit over service is immeasurable! the next time i'm waiting for a ferry to catalina or swinging through the sea side village on my bike, i will NEVER be tempted to even give them another $5.40 worth of business that i already gave them... and, the smoothie was a frozen one from a bag - meh...

The sandwiches here are AMAZING! Stacked high like a New York Deli, you will not be disappointed at the portions and quality of meat. Try the Ruben. It's awesome!

Harbor Deli is AWESOME. It is a traditional-style New York Deli, also offering some menu items that have their own twist. We have eaten here a few times and really enjoyed it. The food is always good, the meat is always high quality. Their Pizzeria next store is also worth a visit. The only thing keeping them from the 5th star is their prices...a little high for a Delicatessen.

This is the worst Deli in So Cal I don't how they stay open the food sucks the deli meat is packaged just like in a grocery store. There is an old waitress that is a real bitch. She must be related to the owner or have black mail pictures on the owner in my option. I give it one star only because its the lowest score you can give.

I had a huge cheese pizza slice which was a bit burned on the bottom but was thin (like I like it) and the chees was oily and yummy. My friend ordered a veggie burrito which had hummus, avocado, and feta cheese. I tried it and it was very good. Our bill was $21. Not bad at all. It was a bit small inside but had some outdoor seating. The waiters seemed rushed and stressed. They had a large selection of food and I would go back.

Good place to eat when you're waiting for the whale boat...I had a really great deli-style sandwich there - Corned Beef! Eating outside is very nice.

Great Deli. Very surprised to find such good food in a touristy place like Dana Harbor. GREAT pastrami sandwich piled high. Big salads that are fresh and tasty. Friendly service and a nice covered patio. Every meal comes with their delicious pickles. It was so good that we came back again the next day because I had to have more of that pastrami.

Very overpriced sandwiches. I tried it once because I keep a boat in the harbor and it is close by. However the sandwich was seriously lackluster in quality and quantity, basically twice the price of a Subway $5 foot long. My advice? Hike up the hill to the Subway on PCH, it's worth the effort.

Read other reviews and was still gonna go. Food was good and pricing is very fair considering location (in the marina). Our server was great and lots of fun. Menu is innovative w/lots more than just sandwiches. I had the brisket burrito and my partner in crime the pastrami. Would go back.

Had dinner here last night, we just moved to the area and have tried other deli's around, including the one on PCH right down the street, but it doesn't even come close to the Harbor Deli in quality and quanity! It was just before closing and we just wanted to pick up and enjoy the food at home. We ordered a jumbo pastrami and a cup of chicken soup. They were both excellent and very tasteful! I also ordered a side of their homemade coldslaw and was a little disapointed that they charged $2 for this little cup of it, but it was also amazing! I found out they deliver up to 6 miles from the store, so next time I will try that and re-post our experience!

Feel bad for giving Harbor Delicatessen only 2 stars because as I sat and waited for my food and service (both took quite awhile due to them being understaffed) I could see that the staff was working as hard and fast as they could. I see that our food was up for 5-10 min but there was no one there to run it so by the time we got our food, it was luke warm/cold. Unfortunately won't be back.

I've been doing here since it opened with Tommy as the owner, and back then it was LIVELY and PACKED everyday, but since the new ownership I have to say that business has slowed down! The prices are really high, but they do have some good items on their menu, so I keep going back! Almost all of the sandwiches are good and the Mazo Ball Soup is amazing! The Italian food isn't bad! And they just introduced Lunch and Dinner specials from 11-3 and 4-8! Its pretty good food but REALLY expensive for what you get! Nice location though! Ask for Lori when being waited on! She is AMAZING!!!

I was waiting for the Catalina express to board so I decided to grab something to eat. This was the closest & only thing that was open so I chose a breakfast burrito. I thought it being $7 it would be good. I waited about 15 min and had 5 min to board. ...that 5 min went by and the boat was boarding and still no breakfast burrito in hand. First of all, the blonde chick with the phone in her boobs had poor customer service. She assumed I was paying with cash and when I took my card out to pay, she let out this heavy sigh as if I was inconveniencing her. She shouldn't assume the way a customer is going to pay, instead ask. After waiting almost 30 minutes, I left...NO food in hand and an empty stomach. My mom waited for it and the boat barely just left after she boarded. So I decided to eat the burrito after my mom got it and was not satisfied at all. It was soggy and the salsa wasn't good. It was rushed and I was not happy. Never going there again.

I've been coming here since they've opened. Great service, all the ladies are very nice and pleasant. The food is always good here, I tend to get the Cold Cut Italian sandwich and my wife usually get's the half salami sandwich with a bowl of their famous chicken noodle soup. I'm not a huge fan of chicken noodle, but theirs is super good! Also if you have a dog, you can dine outside in the patio area with them.

Late lunch and hardly any customers. I suppose it was good that it wasn't busy when I went. The server wasn't very friendly. The food was overpriced, but it's expected considering the restaurant is located near the Marina. I ordered their BBQ sandwich with your choice of potato salad, cole slaw or fries ($1.00 more). I had to double check with the server to see if the jar of pickles was included in with the meal. I did not want a surprise charge for pickles. The sandwich portion was fairly big. I was only able to finish half of my sandwich and the potato salad. It was very filling. Not sure if I'll make another trip here. There are other surrounding restaurants I would like to try, if I visit Dana Point again.

I can't say they had bad service, because to say so would imply that they provided any type of service whatsoever. We walked in to order a cup of coffee. Two women were behind the counter, filling the display case with breakfast pastries and talking to each other. They continued to do so for the entire five minutes we stood at the counter waiting to be served. We finally walked out. I guess the economy is so good that they don't need anybody's business.

I eat here frequently and normally take food to go. The food quality is pretty good, the service is mediocre on a good day. Make sure to call ahead unless you have time to kill. I am writing this review because my To-go sandwich took almost 30 min to make and was given to someone sitting down. I am sure there was a good reason for this and I was very patient however it did frustrate me so hopefully next time the service will be a little quicker.

Best Chicken Soup Money Can Buy. Haven't had their whole menu but very impressed with their soups and salads. It's a must try if you're down in Dana Point Harbor

Don't be in a hurry for breakfast. I got over medium eggs when I ordered scrambled, but didn't have time to get a new batch. Bacon was not good either. Only stop in if you're desperate for a bite before you get on the Catalina Express.

Horrible service. The waitress takes 10 minutes to seat us, then 10 minutes to come back and take our order. When she took our order, she says "What you want?" Come to find out, its not even a waitress, its the manager. Very rude, yelled at another customer and made a mistake on our order and tried to blame it on another waitress. the food was cold when we finally got it and super salty. I will never go back there again.

NY NY ... but now I'm in San Diego county's Vista. When in need of a deeeelicious pastrami sandwich on good rye (wish I could get 'no rye seeds') Harbor Deli is where I park my car and my tush. Even when heading north for other reasons, I plan my lunch at Harbor Deli ... you bet!!! I haven't really tasted other fare because the pastrami is what calls my name ... as do the fab pickles. Oh yes!! I even like being recognized as a 'regular' who drives 40 miles for her fix of NY -- and the wait folks are right on the button, too. Love 'em. When going to the Pageant of the Masters, this is my spot for pre-crafts and show. [added on 16July2012 - they have other foods! - there are also nice shops to enjoy, as well as other activities along the water. Yes, this is a harbor and tour boats to Catalina Island]

The only reason I am even giving 1 star is because the NY style pizza was good and the "deli fries" we got were pretty good too. The reason I would have given negative stars is because we went in there just to get a can of soda before the whale watching trip. An older woman that was working behind the counter was being extremely rude to a customer- raising her voice and rolling her eyes...over a f*cking side of potato salad. It was really embarrassing. The only reason we went back is because my friend really wanted pizza & fries and we were starving. When we went back, that woman was gone thankfully, but the girl that seemed to be running the place (the deli side- there are 2 parts to the restaurant) also had an attitude. Again, we were starving so whatever. On a side note, let me say that the two guys working in the other part of the restaurant (the pizza/ice cream side) were extremely nice and helpful. The girl in the side we were eating at was just so annoyed to be working. If you don't like your job, let someone else have it! My most favorite part of the whole experience was when the b*tch added her OWN tip to my receipt. I made the mistake of not zeroing out on the tip line- we left a cash tip. When I checked my bank online- there it was. She had taken the liberty to add her own tip to my card. It was only $1.50- but.... Yeah, the food was good, but the service was GARBAGE. Make sure you zero out the tip line unless you want unsolicited tips added on. Never going back EVER!

Despite the generally negative reviews we stopped in to have a couple of sandwiches here and were very pleasantly surprised. We both had the Pastrami Ruben and were very satisfied with the size and quality of the sandwiches. The potato salad side was excellent but the slaw lacked flavor and creaminess. Would definitely come back and share a sandwich since the portions are huge.

I ordered chicken soup and matzo ball soup and got the saltiest chicken soup ever. Couldn't even eat it and the matzo ball soup they delivered was chicken soup with one matzo ball! Ugh! So that was salty to the max too. They refused to listen to my complaint but just kept talking over me until I gave up. What a waste of $25.00!! So disappointing. They used to be good but must have changed hands.

Compared to the abundance of pricey joints to eat at Dana Point Harbor, this moderately priced restaurant should stand out. We stopped here for dinner while enjoying the harbor sites. Wife ordered lasagna, which she said was good but a little too salty. Daughter had spaghetti noodles with butter and parm cheese. She said it was good. I had the calazone - made with ham, pepperoni, mozzarella, and tomatoes. It was somewhat bland, the included red sauce made it tolerable. The inside is pretty small. There are a few tables outside.

This place is on the verge of greatness. With a few adjustments they could be 5 star. They are more than a deli, they qualify as a restaurant. Their food is good and the servi e was too. They have a great location. What tbey did was combine Slice of New York with Harbor Deli. It was a slow Saturday evening and it was our first time. We were confused at first by their signage. Their sign said breakfast and lunch, not dinner.we could not tell they were serving. The owner came out and invited us in after we asked about dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by their offerings but we were confused by their two menus. There were spelling errors and again no mention of dinner items although hey were there. Another issue is the lack of signage on the front side of the building. General lack if ID makes it hard to know what this place is. We were pleasantly surprised to fnid a nice selection of fresh squeezed juices. Their small table top sign said organic juices and didnt mention fresh squeezed. I think they should add that distinction on their signage. Overall we had a good experience but they need a good menu and signage designer to help them present what they truly are ...a good Italian restaurant deli tbat serves breakfast, lunch AND dinner with an offering of organic, fresh squeezed juices.

Outstanding Delicatessen. The food is very good along with friendly service. Our company eats here maybe twice a month, and it has always been just great. The price is that of an "LA" deli, but well worth it in our opinion.

Ate here with 3 friends on Monday. First visit. Food is not kosher. Pickles were in a spoiled foggy brine and tasted scummy. I ordered a shrimp salad with anchovies. Shrimp were flavorless and mushy. Anchovies were discolored and tasted poorly. I also ordered calamari which was good but not great - it tasted as if it were deep fried in a poor grade oil. One friend ordered a corn beef sandwich which was lean but low grade meat with little taste. Another friend ordered a turkey sandwich and fries which were both done well. My third friend had matzoball soup and a ham sandwich which were also done well. 2 bad meals out of four is not acceptable. The service was very friendly.

I ate here for breakfast this morning after running with my running club in Dana Point. It's very casual, which was perfect since we were dressed in shorts and t-shirts. I had the "KIS" breakfast: 2 eggs, hashbrowns or potatoes, and toast. I opted for scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, and sourdough. For some reason, when my order came, it also had bacon on the plate, which I don't eat. I said to the server that I didn't know I was getting bacon, but she didn't comment. My BF and two others shared the bacon and said it was really good. Unfortunately, when the bill came, there was an extra $2 on it for the bacon. BF went ahead and paid for it. The breakfast I did actually order was $5.50. It was good standard fare. Some others at the table had breakfast burritos, bagel sandwiches, and oatmeal. The menu was very extensive with pancakes, French toast, omelets, etc. They also serve lunch and dinner. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if you're already in the harbor, it's a good place to eat. The unisex restroom could have been a little nicer, and I never was offered a refill on my iced tea, plus with the bacon incident, I give Harbor "New York Style" Delicatessen 3 stars. UPDATE: I finally realized why my breakfast was called "KIS"...Keep It Simple! Duh!

Food was good. Server was friendly and efficient. It's a little pricey for a deli which is why it got 4 stars and not 5.

Strictly food wise, this is by far the best deli in DP, without question. I've only had the traditional deli sandwiches and it's all NY style, top of the line deli meat, not the over the counter boars head crap. Perfect for take out or catering, freshest rye bread, great fries, its a bit rundown and old school inside so that's the only thing keeping it from 5 stars but if you want premier deli meat, this is the spot.
